Over the last while I have slowly been trying to free up some space in my freezer and I recently came across some pizza sauce that I had left over after making a pizza a while back. As soon as I stumbled upon it I remembered thinking that I had wanted to use it to make a hot cheesy pizza dip when I put it in the freezer. Once I had that thought there was no turning back and I was already dreaming up recipes for the dip.
At first I was just going to follow my standard hot cheese dip template where I just mix everything up, pour it into a dish and bake it until the cheese is melted, golden brown and bubbling but then I had another idea. I wanted to top the dip with slices of pepperoni but my normal dip baking dish is small and it would only allow for about three slices of pepperoni to go on top so I needed something bigger, like a pie plate. Now we were talking about something that is looking more and more like a pizza so why not make it more like a pizza with a cheese layer on the bottom that is covered with a layer of pizza sauce that is topped just like a regular pizza?
Since this pizza dip is in the form of a pizza, you could top it with any of your favourite pizza toppings. For my first pizza dip I decided to go with some classics in the form of pepperoni, green pepper and olives. I had also planned on some sauteed sliced mushrooms but I completely forgot to pick them up when I went grocery shopping. Even without the mushrooms, this pizza dip was so addictively good and it disappeared far too quickly! I served the hot cheesy pizza dip with toasted, garlic rubbed baguette slices which made perfect beds for large spoonfuls of melted, gooey, cheesy pizza goodness. I can’t wait to experiment with other versions of this dip using other pizza topping combinations!
Pizza Dip
A layered, hot cheesy dip with all of the flavours of pizza including pizza sauce, cheese, pepperoni, olives and green peppers.
ingredients
- 4 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1/4 cup parmigiano reggiano (parmesan cheese), grated
- 1 cup pizza sauce
- 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1/4 cup parmigiano reggiano (parmesan cheese), grated
- 2 ounces pepperoni, sliced
- 2 tablespoons green pepper, sliced
- 2 tablespoons black olives, sliced
directions
- Mix the cream cheese, sour cream mayonnaise, mozzarella and parmesan and spread it across the bottom of a pie plate.
- Spread the pizza sauce on top and sprinkle on the cheese, pepperoni, green pepper and olives.
- Bake in a preheated 350F/180C oven until the sides are bubbling and the cheese cheese has melted and turned golden brown on top, about 20-30 minutes.

Ooh, I'm a big fan of cheesy dips. My favorite quick dip for when friends come over is taking a can of chili, mixing it with a block of cream cheese, then mixing and topping with a handful of whatever shredded cheese is in the fridge. THIS, however, is a work of art, and looks absolutely divine. Well done!

Question .. Do I rub the baguette slices with the garlic clove before or after I toast them? Also do you brush them with olive oil before you put them in the oven to toast? Thanks ! Cher

Made this Saturday night – loved it!
Kevin says
Anonymous: For the toasted garlic rubbed baguette slices: Brush the baguette slices with olive oil, toast them and then rub them with the garlic.
Caroline says
Made it mid-way through a bbq last night with cheddar instead of parmesan, olive cream cheese, and creme fraiche for the soured cream, topped with red pepper, ham and salami. Dash of hot sauce for the braver folks 😉

So, I'm a complete microwave idiot – because I don't have one at home. But all I have at work is a microwave, and this looks like something my students would LOVE at a party. Do you think I could make this in the microwave – since I don't have access to an oven at my office? Thanks for the idea — it looks sinfully delicious!
Kevin says
Lisa Fountain: I do not use my microwave all that often but it should work, though it may not look as good as the pepperoni and cheese definitely benefits from that upper heat element in the oven.

I love this idea. I'm hosting a tailgate and watch party for the UT, BYU game and I'm desperately searching for recipes–this one is perfect!
Allison says
If I make this in a 9×13, would I be safe just doubling all the ingredients?
Also, I'm just beginning to be a "from scratch/better ingredients" cook. When you say grated mozz and parm, this means I need to buy a block of each and grate it? Or can I use the shredded mozz and grate the parm? I'm cooking for a large group that will not be able to tell the difference. 🙂
Kevin says
Allison: A 9×13 with a doubled recipe will work and more is better as this dip disappears quickly! 🙂 Shredded mozzarella works just as well.
fite4truth says
Made it, the family loved and it was so easy and quick, I also have a small kitchen. Thanks!

Does this actually taste like pizza? My husband is very very picky and as soon as he saw sour cream, mayonnoise and cream cheese he was totally against it. Do I need these or can I do it without?

This was fantastic! Made it twice this weekend and everyone raved! Thanks for sharing a great recipe. I plan to make it several times in the near future with the holiday party season approaching. I would like to try this for Xmas. How long can this dip be left out before it becomes too cold to dip bread?
Kevin says
Anonymous: Of course the dip is best when it is still warm but if you are using something like toasted baguette slices you will be able to dip them into it for a long time. I like to serve the dip with a spoon on the side so that you can just scoop the dip and place it on your bread.
Cooking Rookie says
Wow, what an amazing recipe! Pinned to my Favorite Food Blogs board!
I found your blog through friends who threw a yummy dinner party solely from your recipes. I think they pretty much religiously follow you. Now looks like I am joining the cult – it's a really amazing site!
The only other question is: are you still as thin as in that picture with all that cooking ;-)? And if yes, how do you do it? That would be the secret to happiness for me 😉
Kevin says
Cooking Rookie: Thanks! There is no secret really and it isn't easy with all of the food that I make; just lots of exercise. 🙂 I walk home from work every day which takes about an hour. This year for the first time I was also jogging every other night while it was warmer out. I also try to balance all of the rich food that I eat, like this dip, with lots of steamed green veggies.

So I didn't feel like making a real meal for dinner, so I made this dip. I was planning on using some random marinara sauce in my fridge, but when I went to use it, it had grown fuzz, oops. BUT I did have 1/2 a jar of roasted garlic alfredo in the fridge that was still good, so I used it, and the dip is still delicious.

Yum!! What bread did you pair it with?
Rhiannon says
I made this a few months ago. It was delicious! I pre-cooked the pepperoni slices because I was worried about it being too greasy. Not sure if there was much of a difference, though. I also used the mini-pepperoni's, and put some pepper rings on it for some heat. Turned out VERY awesome. Thanks for the recipe!
Tara says
I know this seems basic, but I'd love some tips on how you do those fantastic crusty crostinis to go with dips like this
J & D Burke says
I made this for the super bowl tonight and it was super!!!
Kevin says
tamtamx: I like to serve this pizza dip with sliced baguette that I toast and rub with a bit of garlic.
Tara: I generally lightly brush the sliced baguette with a bit of olive oil and then place them under the broiler few a few seconds, though you have to watch them closely or they will burn. After I pull them out I rub them with cloves of garlic.
Jaz says
i made this for a superbowl party earlier this week, and it was amazing! i used mini pepperonis so there would be more to go around and i also added pineapple chunks and topped it with chopped parsley and oregano 🙂 next time i think i may experiment with using ricotta instead of cream cheese, and layering the pineapple chunks and mini pepperoni on the creamy cheese dip and on the top as well.
Kevin says
Jaz: I am liking the sound of a "Hawaiian" pizza dip with pineapple and ham!
AmyLynn in the Attic says
This looks & sounds YUMMY! I cant wait to make this recipe. But I have a question, I notice that:
1/2 cup mozzarella, grated
1/4 cup parmigiano reggiano (parmesan), grated
is printed twice. Is that in error?
Thanks!
Amy
Kevin says
AmyLynn in the Attic: The first pair of cheese in the recipe are used in the cream cheese base and the second is sprinkled on top of the pizza sauce layer.

Since you're a dip kinda guy… my old neighbor makes an all-time faorite of mine. Take a package of Tennesee Pride (or store brand) mild Italian sausage and brown it in a pan. Add one and a half packages of cream cheese (12 oz total – she uses both packages, I find that a little too loose and creamy) and a can of Rotel diced tomatoes with green chilis; heat through and serve warm or cold with whatever dippers you feel like. Every time I make this dip, people ask me for the recipe. 🙂

Is it possible to crock pot this?

This isn't too bad for a low carb diet – I figured it out to be 12 grams of carbs per serving. Use the "Lighter Side's" recipe for cauliflower bread and it's great 🙂

Kevin, Can I prep this now and refrigerate it, then cook and serve tomorrow for Super Bowl party?

Heidi Muller: Yes, that works well! Enjoy!

I was just going through your site and saving 30 minute meals to my Google Drive, and I saw this listed at the bottom of your Pot Roast Beef Philly Cheese Steak dip. I have been making this dip for at least five years now, it is one of my go-to dips to bring to any party, serve at my appetizers-only New Year’s dinner, etc.,and everyone always wants the recipe!! It is SO GOOD!!! I do usually add about an extra quarter, or so, of the amount of the cream cheese, sour cream, and mayo, and I use a jar of Classico pizza sauce. I only top it with pepperoni. I probably add more cheese on top than called for, as well…lol That is a common thing for me…. It is a super delicious recipe!! Thank you for sharing it so long ago!!! You have made a lot of my friends very happy 😉

What should you use to dip with.always confuses me. Veggies? Bread or tortilla chips Help?
kevin says
My favourite is baguette, sliced, brushed with oil, toasted and then lightly rubbed with a clove of garlic. Otherwise, bread, tortilla chips, chips and veggies are all good!
